スクリーニングとは、集団をふるいにかけて目的物を選別することです。創薬におけるスクリーニングとは、疾患を改善する作用をもつ物質を薬剤候補の集団から見出したり、最も高い薬効を示す物質を選別する作業を指します。疾患の原因となる特定の標的（タンパク質や遺伝子）に結合し、その働きを阻害または活性化する作用をもつものを選別する標的ベーススクリーニング（target-based screening）、疾患の特徴（表現型）を再現したモデル細胞に対して、その疾患の特徴を変化させるものを選別する表現型スクリーニング（phenotypic screening）、数万～数百万もの大量の薬剤候補集団から望む作用を持つものを高速に選別するハイスループットスクリーニング（HTS: high throughput screening）など、様々なスクリーニングの考え方や方法があり、新たな薬剤の創出の過程で活用されています。
従来は、癌細胞や不死化された株化細胞を使わることがほとんどでしたが、近年、iPS細胞由来分化細胞も使用されるようになってきています。

Screening is the process of screening out a population to select the target product. Screening in drug discovery refers to the process of finding substances that have the effect of ameliorating diseases from a group of drug candidates or selecting the substances that show the suitable efficacy. There are several concepts and methods for screening, which are used in the process of creating new drugs. Some examples are: Target-based screening where a substance that binds to specific targets (proteins and genes) that cause disease and inhibits or activates their functions is selected, phenotypic screening which selects the substance that changes the characteristics of the disease in a model cell where disease characteristics is reproduced; and high throughput screening (HTS) that quickly selects the one with desired effect from a large population of thousands to millions of drug candidates.
